Bishop in a Kayak to reach Oihi this morning
The Assistant Bishop of Auckland is expected to end his pilgrimage in a kayak from Auckland to Oihi in the Bay of Islands late this morning.
Bishop Jim White has called it ‘his hikoi’ to mark 200 years since Maori and Christian missionaries gathered for the first Christian service in New Zealand on December 25 1814.
They will arrive at Oihi Beach, the same beach where 200 years ago, Samuel Marsden and the Maori Chief Ruatara arrived on The Active. The beach is where the Marsden Cross is sited at the water’s edge.
The trip began last Sunday morning from Auckland’s Mission Bay. Bishop Jim has made the 250km trip with a friend from school days.
Bishop Jim has kept a
blog to tell of the coastline and what they saw
