Celebrations All Round for Feast at Ashburton

West Melton’s Harry Feast has got 2015 off to a dream start winning the South Canterbury Saddlery Horse Mini Prix Series aboard Double J Butler at the Ashburton Area ESNZ Grand Prix Showjumping and Show Hunter Show today.

Stepping out for the first time at this level, the 19-year-old posted one of five clears in the first round over the Eryn Duffy-designed track with the others to Nicole White on Cricklewood Ace, Claudia Hay (Mosgiel) on Euro Sport Heartbreaker, Kate Cavanagh (West Melton) on Vermont and Tegan Fitzsimon (West Melton) on Alacazam MH.

A dominant winner of yesterday’s Rainer Irrigation/Canterbury Equestrian Young Rider, Nicole White (Invercargill) was first out over the shortened course posting 30.71 seconds but took two rails in the process. Feast was next, leaving everything up in 34.07 seconds, followed by Hay who opted for a steady clear on her stallion, coming home in 36.44. Cavanagh had one fence down, leaving it up to Fitzsimon, who produced a faultless round but just wasn’t quite quick enough, finishing in 34.81 seconds.

Feast was rapt with the win. “Very happy. It was a nice course to step up on. We have just been working away slowly. It’s nice to have finally figured him out, it has taken a while,” he says.

It topped off a great weekend for the youngster, who also won the Mitavite Munga 6 Year Old Series with the only double clear round aboard Double J Bouncer. He was also second in the Telford Junior Rider and sixth in the Canterbury Equestrian Young Rider, on Double J Bouncer and Double J Butler respectively.

Hay continued her winning ways in the Country TV Horse Grand Prix aboard her stunning imported stallion Euro Sport Centavos, taking the win with the only double clear of the four strong field, finishing ahead of Rose Alfeld on My Super Nova, who put in a solid performance in just her first Grand Prix start.

Halswell’s Steffi Whittaker backed up from taking the title at the South Island Championships prior to Christmas guiding Moonlight Glow to success in the Cochranes of Canterbury/ESNZ Pony Grand Prix Series just managing to hold out newbie Rohan Tennekoon (West Melton) on Mangakaraa Carbon Copy, while local Jamiee Bird took out the Team Cubitt Pony Mini Prix on Showtym Image. Older sister Kimberley (Bird) also experienced success, taking out the hotly-contested Mainland Coachwork Ltd/Telford Junior Rider Series on Wenrose Vertigo with the fastest time in the seven-strong jump-off.
