Dr Apirana Tuahae Kaukapakapa Mahuika

I mate ki tana kaenga ki Turanga i waenganui i tana whanau. Ko Apirana te potiki a Te Hamana raua ko Tangipo. Ko te taina a Putiputi Rangiriri, Nepia, Pani, Rewa, Matanuku (Mack), Te Warihi, Michael (Mickey), Manutangirua, Poihipi, Pahoe, Jim, Matuakore me Rangiriri (ko Matuakore anake kei te ora tonu). Ko te hoa Rangatira o Karin. Ko te papa o Matanuku raua ko Hamana. Ko te 'Hampa' o Renata, Karin, Umuariki me Kuraunuhia. Ko "Uncle Api" ko "Papa Api" ranei ki te tokomaha.

It is with heavy hearts that we acknowledge the passing this day of Dr Apirana Mahuika, who died early this morning surrounded by his whanau.

Papa Api was a man of many great gifts and occupied a long list of roles including priest, teacher, scholar, politician, and leader. Chair of Te Runanganui o Ngati Porou, and a rangatira of his iwi, he leaves behind him an impressive legacy of achievements in the pursuit of excellence and protecting and promoting the self-determination of Ngati Porou.

He was also a much loved husband, father and grandfather to his whanau, and we ask you to join us in expressing our aroha to them at this time.

He will be taken today to Te Rahui Marae, Tikitiki and will lie in state there until his funeral service at 11am Thursday 12 February 2015. He will be buried at his whanau urupa at Kaitaha.

Na reira, ma hea e ea atu ai a aitua, tua atu i a roimata, me hupe, me te aroha noa o te Atua. Moe mai ra e te papa.
