Sommet Sports looks to strike back with crowdfunding
Sommet Sports Press Release – 09/02/15
Sommet Sports looks to strike back with New Zealand’s largest Project Crowdfunding
On 12 December Sommet Sports’ dream of free sports for Kiwis was cut short, but thanks to the overwhelming support and determination from our viewers, this may not be the case. Sommet is getting ready to strike back, better than ever, with the help of its loyal followers.
Before Sommet Sports shut down, over 4% of New Zealand was watching daily. It also had a cumulative monthly viewing audience of over 1.1 million which exceeded all other sports channels in New Zealand.
Sommet Sports CEO Andrew Reeves said “When Sommet Sports ceased, I thought it was all over was looking to get a job. We decided to reach out to our followers online and received thousands of emails and posts offering assistance. Everyone stated how much they would miss our channel and most offered to assist financially. Sommet's impact was greater than I had even imagined and it's truly moving.”
Sommet Sports has set a minimum goal of $300,000 to get back up and running, and ensure it has a sustainable model for the future. This starts with setting up on a 24/7 streaming channel on the internet, hiring part of our team back and working on our partnership model. If $500,000 is raised Sommet Sports will go to all platforms (part time/weekends), and at $1.2 million be available 24/7. The internet channel would have a small charge but anyone that donates would be given a complementary subscription.
Sommet Sports broadcast a number of varied sports, some of which had not been shown in NZ and it intends to try and gain the rights to these Sports and some new ones too.
Andrew Reeves stated “If we get the support that we need from the crowdfunding we will look to crowdfund for the rights for local sports and put them on Free to Air TV which normally would not be possible. I do hope that we get the support that we need and people come with us on this journey”
Raising $300,000 it would be the largest crowdfunding project ever in New Zealand.
Sommet Sports will be hosting a launch event for media and fans in Auckland 6PM Friday at Empire Tavern (137 Victoria St W). For more details or to RSVP please contact Andrew directly (andrew@sommetsports.co.nz).
