Sons of Liars – new Web Series by Wellington Teens
Wellington February 10th 2015 – What happens when a bunch of Wellington teens decide to make a web series? They do it. From writing to acting to directing and funding.
In mid-2014 Oscar Bartle and Daniel Nodder, Wellington High students both keen on film, decided they wanted to make a web series.
Both teens were interested in acting and performing, Daniel is part of a successful hip-hop group and both do Theatresports at CPAS in Wellington.
However, writing, organising and directing a web series was an entirely new challenge. The teens had to find actors, locations and with no funding manage it all on a zero budget.
“We have really supportive families,” says Oscar. “We were able to use our own homes to film and our parents supplied food. Actors will work for nothing, but the rule, we were told, is you have to supply food!”
Both teens found it very challenging to wrangle so many people their own age.
“We’re teens, so were used to people telling us what to do, it was a new experience to have to organise everyone and tell them what to do. It was a challenge, but we knew this was a great idea and everyone who got involved was fully on board,” says Daniel.
“We had students not only from High, but St Pats town, Wellington Girls and Scots, it was good to have the mix of kids involved, it meant it felt really collaborative, with young people working together from some really diverse school backgrounds.”
Both boys came up with the idea of exploring the supernatural, as they knew all of their friends were into horrors and so felt it would make good viewing.
They shared the writing and the organisation and feel it’s a great accomplishment at such a young age (both are 16), to not only write, but organise, direct, produce, edit and market a web series.
“We know some young people are doing really successful stuff on the web, but most of them are just vlogging or making trick shot videos. We’ve done something that takes a real step up from that,” says Oscar, who was awarded a film scholarship in 2014.
The teens hope the series will gain a following so they can potentially make money to fund the second set of episodes of series one.
