WG Grace Comes to Wellington

The Immortal Grace stars exclusively at the New Zealand Cricket Museum this summer

100 years after his death, the New Zealand Cricket Museum is celebrating WG Grace through The Immortal Grace, an exclusive exhibition for the 2015 Cricket World Cup.

Featuring objects that have remained in WG Grace’s family since WG himself used them, The Immortal Grace celebrates cricket’s first superstar and explores his unique links to New Zealand.

Included within the exhibition is a cricket ball used in 1865’s Gentlemen of the South v. Players of the South match where WG Grace claimed match figures of 13 wickets for 84 runs. The match is officially recognised as Grace’s First Class debut.

New Zealand Cricket Museum Director, Jamie Bell, explains the significance of this collection and the stories within The Immortal Grace: “The iconic images of WG Grace are instantly recognisable as a symbol of the golden age of cricket.

He is recognised as the father of the modern game so, to be able to celebrate him during the Cricket World Cup is both fitting and an incredible privilege for the New Zealand Cricket Museum."

“Grace has been immortalised and memoralised in many ways, but his links to New Zealand haven’t received much attention. As our national cricket museum, it’s fantastic that we can explore those links back to cricket’s first superstar."

The Immortal Grace opens at the New Zealand Cricket Museum on Thursday 19 February and runs until April 27. During the 2015 Cricket World Cup the New Zealand Cricket Museum is open every day from 10.30am – 3.30pm.
