Wellington Fringer Review : Ballet That Packs A Punch
Ballet That Packs A Punch

The Ariel Middlemiss Dance Collective is presenting their new work Dead Silent as part of this years Fringe Festival. It's their second offering, last year debuting with Frame of Mind, a series of choreographic works that explored thought patterning and emotions.
This year, they've taken ballet to new places with their mystery show. The audience is invited at the start of the show to scour the set for clues as to what happened to the Smythes, (a newlywed couple that moved into Kent terrace to renovate).
The story takes place in the couples living room, and moves through what the choreographer(Middlemiss) sees as happening to the couple, why they disappeared and so on. The choreography is very well thought out and suits the performance space(the Dome at BATS). The two leads, (Ariel Middlemiss and Jacob Reynolds) command the stage and Ariel gives a stand out performance which is very moving.
The lighting is sometimes a bit dark for the movements across the stage, but the dancers make up for it in their committed portrayals. The plot is quite fast paced, but keeps the interest piqued throughout.
The show is running 1st and 2nd Mar, tickets through Bats Theatre, it is well worth a look.
