Shears legend David Fagan misses-out Golden Shears finals
The Golden Shears career of shearing legend David Fagan appears to be over after his elimination today from the Golden Shears Open championship in which he was hoping to win a 17th and final title before retiring from competition shearing next month.
Fagan, 53, finished only 7th in this afternoon’s semi-finals, missing a place in the six-man showdown over 20-sheep each scheduled to start just after 9pm.
His exit mirrored that early in the day from the PGG Wrightson National Circuit in which he was targeting a 10th win.
Fagan first made the Open final when second to brother John in 1984, and won the title 16 times from 1986 to 2009, but after shearing in the final 26 times has missed-out in the last three years, despite this year having won 12 finals around the country.
Another to miss out was 2010 champion Cam Ferguson of Waipawa, leaving Hastings shearer Dion King as the only former winner still in the race. Southlander Troy Pyper and Manawatu shearers Aaron Haynes have all reached the final for the first time.
The six fnalists in order of qualifying are: Gavin Mutch (Scotland and Whangamomona), Nathan Stratford (Invercargill), Dion King (Hastings), Troy Pyper (Invercargill), Aaron Haynes (Feilding), Murray Henderson (Feilding).
