INTRO:

This Saturday’s ANZAC Day will include numerous events to commemorate the 100 year anniversary.

One event on Sydney’s Northern Beaches will capture not only the ANZAC spirit – but also that of the people of Turkey in a unique way.

PACKAGE: Ben Beazley Reporting

The landings of Australian and New Zealand troops in Gallipoli 100 years ago was by long boats. The use of boats to ferry soldiers and suppliers was used not only by allied troops, but also the defending Turkish forces.

To commemorate the landings the South Curl Curl Surf Life Saving club in Sydney has organised an event that will see the 100 year anniversary of the landings remembered by having 100 surf boats from across Australia and New Zealand come to shore at Collaroy Beach.

DETAILS:

As the Dawn Service is underway in Gallipoli, the spectacular sight of 100 surf boats landing on the beach at Collaroy will help commemorate the 100 years since the now legendary Gallipoli landings.

South Curl Curl Surf Life Saving club has partnered with Turkish household appliance giant beko to see 100 surfboats crewed by Australian, Turkish and New Zealanders simulate the Gallipoli landings at Collaroy Beach to mark this special anniversary in an iconic Australian way.

This commemorative event will be held at approx 12.15pm on ANZAC Day, aligning with the Dawn Service at Gallipoli. Large LCD screens on the beach will televise live the Gallipoli Dawn Service in advance of the surf boat landing and wreath laying commemoration ceremony.

After the surf boats have landed, a member of each crew will be handed a commemorative wreath, presented by a representative of a symbolically significant 100 schools, as a small token of thanks to those who served and sacrificed so much. Crews will then return to sea after the ceremony, raise their oars and present the wreaths to the depths.

In the lead up to ANZAC Day the participating 100 schools will research and recapture, in creative essays, the actions of the ANZAC and Turkish forces involved in conflict in order to help young Australians appreciate the significance of the sacrifices made by their predecessors.

Through this positive engagement, the students will come to better appreciate the unique legacy of our national history and more fully understand the extent of the hardship endured—and the courage displayed—by Turks and ANZACs alike.

The writings and research will be displayed at Collaroy Beach on this very special day of commemoration.

As a thank you to the participating schools, a pine sapling that is a genetic descendant of the pine trees from the battle of ‘Lone Pine’ at Gallipoli will be presented to each participating school. These saplings are a memento to symbolise both the passing of our great Anzac tradition from one generation of Australians to the next and in commemoration of a new generation of understanding.

The Gallipoli campaign is often referred to as the moment that Australia and New Zealand came of age. The same campaign set in mot ion events that later saw the Turkish commander, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk go on to become the first President of Turkey, and was credited as being the founder of the Republic of Turkey.

Gallipoli in effect was the birth of these three great nations, and the start of an ongoing friendship that endures to this day.

Our ceremony aims to commemorate the sacrifices of all the combatants on the Gallipoli peninsula all those short years ago.

Surf Boat crews and schools are invited to participate in this event by registering their interest on our website. To date registrations have been received from Australia, New Zealand, Turkey, Germany, and Singapore.

To register to participate as a surf club or a school, please visitwww.anzacbeachmemorial.com.au.
