Top US poet to join charity show for homeless
An upcoming event to raise money for Auckland’s homeless community will be graced by one of America’s top poets.
US National Poetry Slam Champion Ken Arkind will be joining local poetry troupe the ‘Theoradical Hobohemians’ at their charity show ‘Oblivion’ at the Mercury Theatre in May.
Arkind has a reputation as one of America’s top spoken words acts.
He has performed his work across 49 American states, visited Ireland, the UK and down under in New Zealand and Australia.
“This is a Vaudeville meets Beat Generation charity show for Auckland’s inner city homeless’, Ruth Bioletti says.
“Being an ‘On the road’, Jack Kerouac type poet Ken fits the overall concept of the Theoradical Hobohemians like a glove.”
“We’re so lucky and honoured to have a poet of his status in this show it’s unbelievable really, and the poetry community is buzzing!” She continues. .
Bioletti chose the Mercury Theatre as a venue for the event because of its long theatrical history, which she says is still important and relevant to Auckland.
“If I had the money I would buy it myself, but at least I can produce a show there, it feels like home.”
“We decided to collect money to buy blankets and shoes to distribute directly to people. The tickets have been kept as low as possible to encourage people to come and there will a gold coin collection at the ticket desk.”
