Cabaret, Music and Clowning in Wellington for Matariki

Cabaret, Music and Clowning in Wellington for Matariki

They’ve been charming audiences around New Zealand and now the Modern Māori Quartet are heading back to where it all began – in Wellington.

And they’ve teamed up with award-winning physical theatre/dance performers White Face Crew to present a special double bill season at Hannah Playhouse from June 18-20 as part of the Ahi Kaa Festival during Matariki.

Formed in 2011 in Auckland, the Modern Māori Quartet is a fresh take of classic Māori showbands and features the musical talents of four Toi Whakaari NZ Drama School (Te Kura Toi Whakaari ō Aotearoa) graduates – James Tito, Maaka Pohatu, Matariki Whatarau, and Fran Kora.

Hailing from different corners of Aotearoa, the Modern Māori Quartet performs a show riddled with waiata, humour and charm.

The show promises a trip down memory lane into Aotearoa's musical past and present including recent international hits, all with the unique Modern Māori Quartet twist and flavour.

“The Modern Maori Quartet radiate good times. (Oh, to find yourself at a party with a couple of guitars and these guys belting out songs!)” – Metro Magazine
The award-winning White Face Crew combines couch-leaping, shoe-stealing and good old fashioned clowning around in superbly choreographed show Double Derelicts.

Created and performed by Justin Haiu, Tupua Tigafua and Toi Whakaari graduate Jarod Rawiri, Double Derelicts is a show for the whole family guaranteed to amuse and impress.

Two colourful street characters go head to head in a city park. What begins as a hilarious duet turns into a charming tale when a gloomy businessman interrupts their daily routine. Will his dark clouds engulf them or can they turn his frown upside down? This is top- notch physical theatre and dance from Auckland-based White Face Crew.

“The skilled cast seamlessly fuse clown and movement with a touch of poignant melodrama” – Theatreview
