Bruce Luxford Exhibition - SPONTANEOUS

Bruce Luxford Exhibition - SPONTANEOUS

Wellington surrealist artist Bruce Luxford's new exhibition at The Kiwi Art House Gallery is a mix of the humorous and often political surrealist art Bruce is known for, and a series of abstracts, a new direction for the artist.

Now that the 100 year anniversary of World War 1 is being commemorated, an exhibition of surrealism and abstract art is particularly timely. The origins of surrealism is in the dadaism, an intellectual movement of thinkers writers and artists that emerged during the war in opposition to the conflict. Dadaism was also influenced by the new ideas in art, including abstraction.

Bruce Luxford's surrealism art links to its origins in the Dadaism movement with social commentary spiced with humour. In 'Greenway' the Wellington mayor is seen in a cycling contraption flanked by councillors on wind powered unicycles as they make an unsteady progress down a decaying SH1.

The conflict between cars and highways versus cyclists, the sale of land to overseas interests, and the impact of the dairy industry are all topics for Luxford's humour in the surrealism paintings of this exhibition. The abstract work is based on the 'paint pour' method. Luxford explains his approach 'The first step was visualising a structure that offered potential. Exactly what potential didn't really matter. The second step was to introduce a spontaneous less predictable element by applying a paint pour technique. Colour and form begin to inject its own meaning to the work'

The exhibition runs until June 15
