Larry Olsen to Join the 2015 Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour in New Zealand
As the 2015 Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour prepares to head to New Zealand, the Victoria Racing Club (VRC) has announced that 1987 Melbourne Cup winning jockey Larry Olsen will join the celebrations on this leg of the Tour.
Olsen, who won the Melbourne Cup atop Kensei in 1987, will be the special guest in Auckland, Cambridge, Wellington and finally in Taupo, where a public event at Roberts Street Reserve will allow locals the opportunity to meet the champion jockey and have their photograph taken with the 2015 Emirates Melbourne Cup.
Retiring in 1998 at the age of 50, Olsen amassed more than 1,000 wins including 24 at Group One level. An inductee of the Queensland Racing Hall of Fame, Olsen also rode in Singapore, Hong Kong and England during his illustrious career.
VRC Chief Executive, Simon Love, welcomed Olsen’s addition to the Tour schedule.
“Larry Olsen had a remarkable career as one of Queensland’s most enduring and successful jockeys. His triumph in the 1987 Melbourne Cup is just one of many colourful stories Larry will share during his visit to New Zealand,” Mr Love said.
While in New Zealand the Cup will visit Auckland on Tuesday 21 July, Cambridge on Wednesday 22 July, Wellington on Thursday 23 and Friday 24 July and Taupo on Sunday 26 July.
The $175,000, 18-carat gold Emirates Melbourne Cup trophy commences its Tour in July and will travel to 33 towns and cities across Australia, New Zealand and for the first time, Malaysia, where it will join a special World War II memorial service.
The 2015 Emirates Melbourne Cup will return to Melbourne on Monday 26 October, ahead of the 2015 Melbourne Cup Carnival before the running of the 155th Emirates Melbourne Cup on Tuesday 3 November 2015.
