Residents of Wellington today celebrated the arrival of the ‘People’s Cup’ when the 2015 Emirates Melbourne Cup Tour visited the capital as part of its New Zealand leg.
In Wellington the Cup travelled from Lambton Quay to Kelburn lookout on the historic Wellington Cable Car followed by a visit to world-renowned special effects facility Weta Workshop.
The famous trophy
also visited Silverstream School where students came
together to experience first-hand the magic and history of
the ‘People’s Cup’.
The Cup was joined in
Wellington by Melbourne Cup winning jockey Larry Olsen who
won the 1987 Melbourne Cup atop Kensei.
Matthew Hardy from the Wellington Cable Car said he was delighted to welcome the Cup aboard.
“The Emirates Melbourne Cup is arguably one of the most famous trophies in Australian sport so it was fitting that the Cup travel on Wellington’s famous Cable Car, which has been servicing local residents and visitors for over 113 years,” said Matthew.
The 2015 Emirates Melbourne Cup will return to Melbourne on Monday 26 October, ahead of the running of the 155th Emirates Melbourne Cup on Tuesday 3 November 2015.
