National Commemoration of the Vietnam War

The National Commemoration of the Vietnam War will be held in the Hall of Memories, Pukeahu National War Memorial Park at 11.00am tomorrow Tuesday 18 August and media are invited to attend.

The Vietnam War, sometimes referred to as the Second Indo-China War or the American War, lasted from about 1960 until 1975.

Described as the longest and most contentious military experience of the 20th century, more than 3000 New Zealand military and civilian personnel served in the Vietnamese conflict between 1963 and 1975. Thirty-seven men died while on active service and 187 were wounded. Two civilians serving with the surgical and Red Cross teams also lost their lives.

Formalities at tomorrow’s commemoration include wreath laying, the roll of honour and last post. Major Peter Stitt (Retired) and Con Flinkenberg are representing Vietnam veterans.
