Christchurch Art Gallery to unveil major new commission by British artist Martin Creed
Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetu, Singapore Airlines and Michael Lett Gallery are bringing acclaimed British artist Martin Creed to New Zealand in October 2015.
The 2001 Turner Prize winner is visiting Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington to give a series of animated and spontaneous talks about his work and life.
Creed's visit is particularly meaningful for Christchurch as Christchurch Art Gallery has commissioned a Martin Creed work that will be positioned on the Worcester Street Boulevard facade of the gallery building.
Christchurch Art Gallery Director Jenny Harper says Creed's minimalist approach confronts the traditional categories of art.
"I'm looking forward to Creed articulating how his work makes us reconsider things we take for granted. His ability to reorder the everyday reality with wit, humour and surprise resonates with audiences," she says.
Born in Wakefield in 1968, Creed studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in London. He was the recipient of the Turner Prize in 2001 for Work No. 227: the lights going on and off. He lives and works in London and Alicudi, Italy.
Creed's free Christchurch talk will be held at the Christ’s College Old Boys Theatre, 2pm Sunday 4 October 2015. For bookings visit: www.christchurchartgallery.org.nz/calendar/detail/martin-creed-talk/.
