Air Force Band brass and woodwinds are casting a spell at The Air Force in Concert on September 27.

RNZAF music director Flight Lieutenant Simon Brew is tackling the swashbuckling Sorcerer’s Apprentice from Walt Disney’s Fantasia, and he has the pictures to match.

“I was spellbound by the soundtrack when I was growing up. With Disney’s animation the music takes on another dimension. ” Flight Lieutenant Brew says.

“People assume that film music is easy, but there are timing considerations. I’ll be matching the music to the pictures I’m seeing on the big screen, like conductors did in the days of the silent movies.”

People who enjoyed the pomp and ceremony of last year’s Air Force Proms have much to look forward to in the band’s new artistic project, re-named The Air Force in Concert.

During a particularly busy year the musicians of the RNZAF have been playing at World War I ceremonial engagements.

“I’m exploring links between our parades and the concert hall,” Flight Lieutenant Brew says.

The band is performing a Ceremony of Beating Retreat on the Opera House stage, while Ron Goodwin’s 633 Squadron is a showstopper.

Two talented jazz soloists will combine with the Air Force Band. The sonorous vocals of LAC Stephanie Paris and LAC Nils Olsen will sing out in works linked to Etta James and Frank Sinatra.

Making appearances on the stage are bagpiper Flight Sergeant Murray Mansfield, the band’s Drum Line, magnificent trombones, and the Swing Band.
