Tikanga expert joins Māori TV

Language and custom expert to join Māori TV leadership

Te kuhunga o tētahi tohunga mo te reo me ngā tikanga ki Whakaata Māori

Language and custom expert Pouroto Ngaropo ( Mataatua, Te Arawa, Tainui, Takitimu and Ngatokimatawhaorua) will join Māori Television’s executive leadership team next month.

Mr Ngāropo will take up the new position of Tumuaki Pūmanawa Tāngata (Head of People, Language and Culture) and be responsible for driving the development of an integrated people, language and culture strategy at Māori Television.

Chief Executive Paora Maxwell says one of the key aspects of the new role will be developing an internal Māori language strategy that ensures that Māori TV staff have the opportunity to learn Māori and that the organisation is bilingual by 2020. Sharing Maōri TV’s strategic vision with iwi and Māori communities will also be another role that Mr Ngaropo will help fulfill.

Mr Ngāropo has extensive knowledge of te Ao Māori, as well as wide-ranging management and also teaching experience. He has held a number of cultural advisory roles and is a former Whakatāne District councillor. He has also been the Chair or member of countless health, community and iwi organisations.

Hai tā te Tāhūhū Rangapū a Paora Maxwell, ko tētahi o ngā kawenga nui i te tūranga hou nei ko te whakahiatotanga o tētahi rautaki ā-roto e whai wāhi ai ngā kaimahi o Whakaata Māori ki te ako i te reo, i runga i te whāinga kia reo rua ngā tāngata o te kamupene ā te tau 2020. Ko tētahi anō kawenga ko te hāpai i te tirohanga rautaki a Whakaata Māori ki ngā iwi me ngā hapori Māori.

He whānui ngā mōhiotanga o Pouroto Ngaropo i roto i te ao Māori, tāpiri atu ko ōna pūkenga i te taha whakahaere me te taha ki te ako. Kua taunga a ia ki ngā tūranga ārahi i te taha ahurea, he kaikaunihera hoki a ia i te Kaunihera o Whakatāne i ngā rā ki mua. Otirā, ka hia kē ngā rōpū hauora, ngā rōpū hapori, ngā rōpū iwi kua noho a ia hei Heamana, hei mema rānei.
