Tasman towns triumph as New Zealand’s most generous

Tasman towns triumph as New Zealand’s most generous

Tasman towns once again top the Oxfam Unwrapped Generosity List to confirm the big-hearted Tasman district as the most charitable region in New Zealand.

For a fifth year in a row, Upper Moutere has won the title of New Zealand’s most generous town according to the 2015 Oxfam Unwrapped Generosity List.

The second place spot has been taken by Takaka to confirm the big-hearted Tasman district as 2015’s most charitable region in New Zealand.

This year, Rodney’s Waimauku took third place with Waikato town Taupiri in fourth. The beachside town of Raglan has made it into the top five for the first time to take out fifth place. The rankings are based on the number of Oxfam Unwrapped gifts purchased per capita in each town.

Rachael Le Mesurier, Executive Director of Oxfam New Zealand said: “Congratulations to Upper Moutere and Takaka for being New Zealand’s most generous communities. It’s fabulous that once again Kiwis in in some of our most beautiful rural areas are giving a hand-up to rural communities in developing countries and helping them to build a better future for their families.”

Tasman Mayor Richard Kempthorne said: “As a predominantly rural and lifestyle district, community co-operation is typical of Tasman residents. It is heartening to see giving does not finish at the end of the street. Our supportive communities are what make living in Tasman so great.”

For the first time, Oxfam has also revealed the most generous suburbs in three of our biggest cities based on the total number of gifts bought. In Auckland, the residents of Mount Eden are the most giving. In Wellington, it’s kind-hearted Karori that comes out on top, and in Christchurch, the community of Avonhead are ahead of the pack in helping others.

Over the years, the Oxfam Unwrapped campaign has raised an incredible $5.65 million to help lift the lives of people in the developing world.

Kiwis purchased a total of $350,000 worth of Oxfam Unwrapped gifts last year ranging from favourites like the Oxfam goat, to toilets for communities and vanilla.

"The impact of Oxfam Unwrapped is huge," adds Le Mesurier."Thousands of generous Kiwis have provided communities living in poverty with tools, seeds, livestock and skills training so they can earn a decent living. They have provided clean water and toilets, education for young people, and many other life-changing essentials to help people work their way out of poverty.”
