James Munro to Race for Lamborghini in the Sepang 12 Hour Race - Kuala Lumpur

Friday, 13 November 2015

New Zealand racing driver James Munro from Christchurch will be representing Lamborghini and Giti Tire at the Sepang 12 Hour Race being held at the Sepang International Circuit in Kuala Lumpur on December 13th 2015.

The Sepang 12 Hour Race is considered to be one of the most high profile races in Asia.

James will join two other drivers, Estonian- Martin Rump and Malaysian- Afiq Ikwhan, racing a Lamborghini Huracan Super Trofeo while competing against other GT cars such as Ferrari’s, Porsche’s, Audi’s and McLaren’s.

At just eighteen years of age, James is one of the youngest drivers racing on the 5,543 km Sepang International Circuit.

In just two years of car racing, James has won the prestigious New Zealand Formula Ford Championship in 2013 before dominating the Fomrula Masters China Series (FMCS) in 2014. He has twice been awarded the Steel Memorial Trophy for Under 21 drivers by Motorsport New Zealand.

This year James has been coaching in the Formula Masters China Series after being selected as a coach first by the KC Motorgroup Ltd. (KCMG) and then by the Volkswagen China's Star Racing Academy. The drivers are either around James age or older.

There were six rounds of the championship, and James travelled to China, Malaysia and Taiwan to attend all the races.

The Star Racing drivers that James coached are being groomed by Volkswagen to potentially be future Formula One stars and he saw this role as a great honour to be trusted with their development.

Over January/February 2016, James will be contesting the Toyota Racing Series with Giles Motorsport. He says this is a very successful series with the likes of Brendon Hartley, Mitch Evans, Richie Stanaway, Nick Cassidy, Shane van Gisbergen and Earl Bamber graduating from the category. James goal is to finish in the top 3. He was a race winner in 2014 after only his second weekend in the series, so James will be trying to mount a strong challenge at the front when he races next year.

Following the Toyota Racing Series, James will race in the USF2000 category, as the first step on the Road to Indy. The winner of this class gets a scholarship to Pro Mazda for 2017.

“The Mazda Road to Indy is the breeding ground for tomorrow’s world-class race car drivers, where these athletes perfect their instincts and abilities as they progress through the ladder system. It is comprised of three series: the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda, the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires, and Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires.”

James goal is to win this championship. The USF2000 is the 3rd step below Indy Car and after this his long term goal is to win the Indy 500 and the Indy Car championship.
