Explosive detector dogs pose for a good cause

One of the contenders for the ‘December pin-up pooch’ title

New Zealand’s Aviation Security Service (‘Avsec’) this week launched a 2016 calendar featuring its highly trained explosive detector dogs (EDD) working to protect the nation’s airports and skies.

The calendars are on sale for $10 and all proceeds go to HUHA (Helping You Help Animals), an animal rescue organisation which has gifted several rescued and reformed dogs to the service’s EDD training programme.

These dogs are now highly trained and qualified, living and working with their loving and capable Avsec handlers.

“We’re really rapt with what Avsec does for these dogs that don’t quite fit into society but go on to do great things in service of their community,” says HUHA’s founder, Carolyn Press-McKenzie.

Avsec EDD National Manager Monique Masoe says that the two organisations have a strong relationship because of their common interest in securing positive outcomes for both the dogs and the communities that they live in.

“As an EDD, the dogs enjoy a great life and do an important job—not just for Avsec, but in safeguarding the travelling public and airport community,” she says.

The calendar also aims to help the public breeze through airport security when they fly and understand more about Avsec’s work, with handy monthly tips and a two-page spread answering some common travel questions.

Featuring an interesting photo of a dog along with some fun date-related facts each month, the calendar was made possible with support from one of New Zealand’s most trusted car brands, Holden.

Holden NZ provides the specially fitted utes for Avsec’s dogs to travel safely and comfortably, and is thrilled to also be involved with the calendar.

“We are incredibly proud to be associated with Avsec and HUHA,” says Holden’s General Manager of Marketing, Marnie Samphier.

“In the same way that the explosive detector dogs keep the public safe, Holden too is committed to and passionate about safety in our cars.”

The calendars cost only $10 each and are available from the HUHA website https://huha.mystorbie.com/shop/calendar-avsec-2016. See also HUHA at www.facebook.com/HUHANZ for announcements about sale points.
