Multifaith Peace Vigil for Human Rights Day

Multifaith Peace Vigil for Human Rights Day

The New Zealand Muslim Association (NZMA) will host a “Prayers for Peace” multi-faith peace vigil on Human Rights Day next week. The vigil is being supported by the Human Rights Commission as well as other faith based communities.

“Prayers for Peace” is dedicated to all those affected by war and terrorism around the world,” said Ikhlaq Kashkari, President of the Auckland-based NZ Muslim Association.

"The NZ Muslim Association stands with all New Zealanders in peace, solidarity and humanity and alongside all victims of wars and violent extremism.”

This vigil demonstrates our support and solidarity with those affected as we pray and hope for peace and resolution. Members from various faiths, Government and Non-governmental organisations will take part.

“I encourage our media who are quick to report on conflict and terrorism – to also be quick to report on how Kiwis are working together to build peace in our communities and lives,” said Race Relations Commissioner Dame Susan Devoy.

“Human Rights Day is a time to remember that we all have a right to live in safety and dignity. Human rights are everyone’s rights and all of us are responsible for protecting them.”

Human Rights Day is observed every year on 10 December. It commemorates the day on which the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
