Introducing VIVID Wellington and POLAR
VIVID Wellington is a new group that has been formed to support the development of socially engaged street art in the city by artists of all ethnicities and genders.
Between 15-21 February next year VIVID is facilitating a festival to celebrate street art in the city during the Fringe Festival. As well as an exhibition at Thistle Hall, a digital street art map, and five new artworks throughout the city, VIVID, with support from Wellington City Council and Havana Coffee Works, will also bring out internationally acclaimed street artist, Phlegm, from England to paint a large mural on the back of the Walrus Gallery building at the corner of Taranaki and Jesse Streets.
To promote the upcoming Festival, VIVID commissioned visiting French artist, POLAR, to produce an artwork on a large wall at Wilson's carpark on Ghuznee Street. This is now complete. (See below).
POLAR says:
As a foreigner I wanted
to represent something which characterises the city of
Wellington. First thing which came to mind was the wind, an
invisible element yet so prominent.
Very difficult to materialise, I decided to represent the wind as a conductor which led the nature and the boats into the bay of Wellington. Curves, dynamics and lines are here to emphasise this feeling.
Boats are symbolised by the geometric shapes in black and white, while the nature is represented by the coloured and intertwined elements.
