Mid-Summer Lantern Installation Set to Wow Dunedin
Imagine walking through an enchanted forest of giant lanterns in a dark warehouse on Dunedin's waterfront in the lead up to Christmas and the Summer Solstice. Well now it's about to become reality for hundreds, if not thousands of Dunedin families.
Mid-Summer Lights is a new event by the team that produces the annual Dunedin Midwinter Carnival which in 2015 attracted an audience of 10,000. Featuring over 60 giant lanterns created over the last decade, this special event will be spell-binding for all ages.
“Over the years we have built a unique collection of giant lanterns thanks to the talented artists who have worked on the Midwinter Carnival event. This is a fantastic asset that no other city has and we wanted to create an opportunity for people to see it in its entirety.
“Mid-Summer Lights is a walk-through installation utilising all the giant lanterns that we have created over the last 10 years. These are works of art that deserve to be seen. Our aim is to take the focus away from consumerism and seasonal stress to one of creating amazing experiences and memories for families.”
The event will run from 16-20 December at a waterfront warehouse. Funding has been provided by the Dunedin City Council events grants and Creative Communities Scheme. There will be a charge for entry to the event to cover costs.
Event Manager, Paul Smith, said the organising trust hoped to highlight just how unique the collection of lanterns is and to hopefully find a more permanent storage facility.
“We've been very lucky to have a storage facility for our lanterns for the last 7-8 years but we are running out of space and we don't have a work space for our artists to make new lanterns for next year's event. We need to find a more permanent solution and Mid-Summer Lights is a step in that direction.”
