Dunedin dancer brings international contact improvisation expert to Dunedin
Dunedin dancer Miriam Marler has arranged for Ralf Jaroschinski, former director of the dance company of the City Theater of Hildesheim, Germany, to come to Dunedin and run three contact improvisation workshops, from January 25 to January 27. Support from the Dunedin City Council and GASP! Dance Collective has made this opportunity possible.
Marler says “It is so exciting to have a world-class teacher come to Dunedin – his experience of over 20 years in this field will make the workshops such a special event. The great thing about this style of dance is that anyone can do it, with no experience needed. It also appeals to professionally trained dancers and actors upskilling their partnering work. Contact Improvisation is well known for being accessible for those who do not fall into the traditional category of 'dancer'. It is used as practice for integrated dance companies -companies comprised of people with and without disability. The dance style supports inter- and intra- personal skills, and helps you build your trust in yourself and others."
Jaroschinski was born in Germany and grew up in Brazil. He graduated as a classical and modern dancer from the University of Music, Theater and Media in Hannover, Germany, and then studied contemporary dance and composition techniques in New York. There, he discovered contact improvisation in 1994. He has facilitated contact improvisation workshops since 2004. He is currently travelling in New Zealand.
Marler is a freelance dancer, choreographer and tutor who teaches Movement Education at the University of Otago and works as researcher of Dance Studies. She has taught advanced and open-level contemporary technique classes, somatic-based improvisation, and Contact Improvisation for GASP! Dance Collective.
