Drag Kings Swarm to Auckland for a Pride Festival
Drag Kings Swarm to Auckland for a Pride Festival Extravaganza
AUCKLAND, 8 February 2016 On Friday 12th of February, drag kings from around the country will be congregating at The Dogs’ Bollix in for a oneofakind camp and cocky drag cabaret. The show, titled ‘The Little Boys’ Room’, f eatures awardwinning male gender illusionists who’ll be descending on the Auckland Pride Festival in a veritable hailstorm of duct tape, glitter and suspiciously sweaty tube socks. These primecut beef cakes will give you a night of humping, thumping, boisterous revelry you’re unlikely to forget.
Drag kings are mostly female performance artists who tape, pack and contour in a process similar to that of a drag queen changing their body shape and appearance to personify male gender stereotypes. They are a minority within the queer cabaret community but those in this show aim to prove that they can be just as vibrant and entertaining as their female counterparts.
The show stars;Nipless Cage (AKL)Rick Rolla (WGTN)Hugo Grrrl (WGTN)Anglebert Humpermink (WGTN) Timothy Taffy (WGTN)
Adonis Noire (AKL)and MC Gary Krumbert (AKL)
Producer and creator Genevieve Fowler says; ‘we’ve seen a huge boom in drag in New Zealand this year and so many young and diverse kings have come out of the woodwork. Having a national community of likeminded showbois is pretty special and it’s amazing we have enough of us to put on a dedicated king show. The cast is so diverse and multitalented. We’ve got virginal kings alongside industry veterans and a big range of styles and personalities. I couldn’t be more excited about this project.’
Fowler also states that, ‘incredibly, we have four mothers on the cast. One of the girls even started binding again only two months after finishing breast feeding. It just goes to show what a freeing and expressive art form drag is, especially when your alter ego is so disparate from your everyday persona.’
The Little Boys’ Room w ill also be touring to the capital for the Wellington Pride Festival, performing again at The Fringe Bar on Friday 11th March at 8pm.
