Girls' Self Defence Project commends Palmerston North sisters

The Girls' Self Defence Project commends the sisters of the young girl abducted in Palmerston North on Friday. The older girls, aged just 7 and 8, did all the right things in their efforts to stop the abduction of their little sister. “The girls used their voices to raise the alarm, they tried to kick the abductor to make him go away, and they sought adult help as soon as they could”, said Julie Goldingham, who has taught Girls' Self Defence courses in the Manawatu over the past 20 years, including teaching more than 2,000 Palmerston North girls in just the past 5 years. “The girls also did really well to recognise the man from seeing him before, and to note identifying features including the colour of his eyes, his hair, and what he was wearing”.

“We are, like everyone else, deeply relieved that the abducted girl was found and returned to her family”, said Girls' Self Defence Project spokeswoman Alison Broad. “We are impressed by the girls’ courage.”

“We strongly believe in the importance of women and girls in our communities being taught how to keep safe from violence and abuse, while emphasising that the responsibility for any attack lies absolutely with the attacker” said Ms Broad.
