Pucker up at Pecking Space...
A group of hopelessly romantic Victoria University architecture students, supported by the Student Architecture Network New Zealand (SANNZ), are engaging with the urban environment of Wellington as part of PARK(ing) Day on Wednesday 9 March, 8am–6pm. The event, organised by the Wellington Sculpture Trust and in association with the Wellington City Council, sees 17 groups take an ordinary park for cars and temporarily transform it into an interactive park for people — providing temporary public open space… one parking spot at a time.

The students’ installation, Pecking Space, is a temporary wall that is part kissing booth, part love locked structure with which you declare your love and attraction of the city. Located on Cuba Street by Swan Lane, Pecking Space aims to liven the street, to engage and provoke discussion, and effectively re-values the metered parking space as an important part of the commons — a site for generosity, expression, socialising and play.
Architecture is often an act of dividing. Dividing warm from cold, out from in, public from private, yours from mine — walls are stubborn reminders of our city, its thresholds and boundaries. Pecking Space demonstrates a contravention of this common practice, by providing a wall for bringing people together. As the day unfolds, it is our hope that we will engage singles, couples, strangers and friends — provoking them to express their sensitive sides, to kiss the wall, leave their mark, and proclaim their love for life in the city (and perhaps each other!).
PARK(ing) Day runs from 8am – 6pm on Wednesday March 9, and is located around the central city, forming a walk from the Railway Station to Cuba Street. In the case of wet or extreme weather the Parks will be on display in the Asteron Centre from 9am – 5pm.
At every park a map will be available to take you on your PARK(ing) Day journey. The Wellington Sculpture Trust is also running a ‘people’s choice’ award for the day where the winner will receive $500. You will be able to vote on site during the event via deposit boxes at each cluster of parks. A gallery of all parks from the afternoon of the event will be available to view on the Dominion post website: www.dompost.co.nz.
