Save the Children Commited to Child Refugees
Save the Children Shows Its Commitment to New Kiwi Children on Children’s Day.
This Sunday marks New Zealand Children’s Day and is a time to think about what it means to be a child in New Zealand says Save the Children.
And as part of its commitment to children, Save the Children is helping almost 400 child refugees who will arrive in New Zealand this year, by paying for school supplies and uniforms.
Save the Children New Zealand’s Chief Executive Heather Hayden says it is education that is the key to a child being able to reach their potential.
Krishna came from Uganda 10 years ago without any English and remembers thinking that it was a very cold country.
“I had never heard of New Zealand before but my school got me involved in many activities which really helped.”
Ms Hayden says it’s vital that ALL children, no matter there they come from, or what sort of traumatic events they have been through, are able to go to school.
“New Zealand Children’s Day reminds us that our children need to arrive in the classroom at the age of five ready to learn and thrive, so they get the best start in life, ”says Ms Hayden.
