Nitro announces 2016 needs of Mareikura

Nitro announces 2016 needs of Mareikura

Te Mana O Mareikura has started off well this year, with their junior membership reaching 50 at their latest wananga and their intermediate and senior teams expected to be at a full capacity of 80 by Novembers South Island competition which will be held in November of this year in Nelson

Mareikura was established in 2004 and is currently taught by one of the co-founding tutors Nikora Nitro. This will be their 12th year of performing and Nitro notes that Mareikura is proud to be able to announce its first intergenerational juniors – which are the children of their first set of performers of 2004.

Today’s media release is to seek support, funding and sponsorship for the group as well as announce that the group is currently looking at raising enough money to purchase its own piece of land for a Maori performing arts wananga complex, a dream that Nitro has had since he started the group in 2004.

Nitro says that “The land being sought after would hopefully be something that would be able to dedicate to Maori performing arts. Currently there are no dedicated Maori Performing Arts spaces here in Christchurch but coincidently there is alot of land for sale that could be purchased for this purpose”

Most groups practice out of schools and marae which seems to suit their needs, but Mareikura is interested in having their own wananga complex that has a performing theatre attached. The land price that we are looking to raise funds for is sitting at around $350-500k and then a wananga complex would cost around 3 million.

Meanwhile – while the big dream is being worked on, the task at hand is to announce that Mareikura is need of the following and if there is anyone out there that could help – that would be great.

Explicitly we need lots of reams of paper for our waiata booklets and administration, some funding or sponsorship to be able to pay for our stationary, photocopying, sponsorship for our wananga venue hire and wananga food i.e - meats and chicken, breakfast cereals, bread, jams, vegetables.

On the higher end of sponsorship or funding needs – we are interested in meeting with anyone that could help us to raise enough money to buy two buses, two vans, a piece of land and a wananga complex.

Nitro says that the junior performers are progressing well and the intermediate and senior teams will start their practices rehearsals and wananga in July. With three teams of 40 (120 performers) entering the south island competitions, we have to start thinking about how all of this can be supported, hence today’s media release

Nitro says that if there is anyone out there that could help out with the needs of Mareikura, he would love to hear from them
