King in the Ring? eight of the best to battle it out

11 April 2016

Eight of the best to battle it out to become first ever 75kg champion

Eight of the most impressive super middle weight kickboxing athletes will be vying to become New Zealand’s first ever 75kg King in the Ring champion this Friday night.

The eight-man eliminator series attracts tens of thousands of viewers and followers from across the world and is the biggest kickboxing event in this country.

Fresh from the China fighting circuit is 27-year-old former Commonwealth champion Mike ‘Blood Diamond’ Tambo.

Blood Diamond says he is hungry for another win and he has some words of advice for the audience

“This time around when I start to fight people shouldn’t blink, because last time they blinked and they missed the knock out,” he says.

Blood Diamond will be up against Lawyer and World Kickboxing Federation (WKBF) Super Middleweight Victor ‘Slick’ Mechkov, Hayden ‘Tat North’ Todd, Mikaera ‘Shotgun’ Povey, Terrence ‘Machine Gun’ Montgomery, Erua ‘Damage’ Druce, Chris ‘Cobra’ Eades and David Watts.

Victor ‘Slick’ Mechkov plans to use the skills he’s learnt as a lawyer to outsmart his opponents.

“A lot of people consider fighters to be punch drunk, but I’ll prove that myth wrong,” he says.

Event promoter and six times world champion Jason Suttie has picked a field of athletes he knows will impress the crowd.

“We’ve selected guys who come to fight and possess X factor skills, raw power and the mentality to mix things up.

“There will be no gimmicks and no side-shows. We stay true to the fighters and the fans,” Suttie said.

King in the Ring is supported by many of New Zealand’s best athletes including the late, great legend Jonah Lomu. As a mark of respect to Jonah and his family, Jonah’s seat will be left vacant for this event.

King in the Ring 75kg will take place at the ASB stadium in Auckland in front of a packed crowd of fans and kickboxing enthusiasts on Friday 15th April at 7pm.
