Mourners have been coming from Nga Hau E Wha this week to Pamapuria outside Kaitaia to farewell Sir Graham Latimer, the long serving chair of the New Zealand Maori Council. He was described as a truly great man, one who loved his people and a founder of the nation that is becoming Aotearoa New Zealand. In Korero Mai ki Ahau this week, Ngapuhi kaumatua Rereata Makiha shares his memories of Ta Kereama and discusses his importance and his legacy.

It’s Matariki, which in recent years has become an increasingly important

celebration of Maori identity. Eruera Morgan talks with Dr Rangi Mataamua, who has been matching up traditional Maori teaching on astronomy with modern science. He says there’s nine stars in Matariki, not seven. Matariki literally means the eyes of god in reference to the story of the wind god Tawhirimatea who became so angry when the sky father Ranging was separated from Papatuanuku, he tore out his eyes and threw them into the heavens.
