CSO and MYO combine forces

CSO and MYO to combine forces to bring the Titan to Christchurch

Following the triumphant 2014 performance of Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 in Christchurch, the Melbourne Youth Orchestra is back to join forces with the CSO to perform the composer’s First Symphony, “The Titan”.

CSO Chief Conductor Benjamin Northey will conduct the two combined orchestras in performing the piece, which has been hailed as a hymn to the spirit of humanity and the world around us, and is one of the most momentous works ever written in the history of music in Lamb & Hayward Masterworks: The Titan

Composer Gustav Mahler’s symphonies are well-known for needing exceptionally large orchestras.

“Mahler's first symphony, 'Titan', is a very special work in its own right, and the chance to play it in Christchurch with a phenomenal orchestra makes it an incredible opportunity!" said MYO Principal Trumpet Sam Beagley.

The concert also features Bernstein’s joyous Overture to Candide, and CSO Principal Clarinet Ellen Deverall leads a trans-Tasman clarinet trio that includes Richard Haynes and Andrew Uren in performing New Zealand composer Eve de Castro Robinson’s Triple Clarinet concerto.
