Williams Takes Out Shuja in First Round of Senior Nationals

A shock upset has come in the first round of the Senior Nationals where unseeded Jo Williams has beaten five times New Zealand Nationals Champion Kashif Shuja in an exciting five setter.

In the Women’s Open draw the top seeds progressed through relatively comfortably. The upsets of the first round came from 20th seed Casey Owen who beat her higher seeded opponent Nadia Hubbard in four games. The other upset came from 17th seed Holly Donnelly who beat 16th seed Anika Jackson in a hard fought five setter.

In the Men’s Open draw Williams played an exceptionally strong game where he worked Shuja hard on court and for Shuja this was not set to be his day. Williams claiming the biggest upset in the first round of the Senior Nationals. The other upset of round 1 came from 19th seed Jackson Beresford who took out 14th seed Brent Lewis.
