TEMER JAMAIS! DEMOCRATIC CRISIS IN BRAZIL
A Brazilian afternoon of Music and Protest
A free event with Brazilian music and an exhibition about recent political events in Brazil.
The Brazilian art community in Wellington and friends are getting together to bring music to the local community and share information about Brazil's recent political crisis on Saturday, 19th November at 1pm at 17 Tory Street in Wellington.
This free event consists of several gigs featuring the Brazilian singer Alda Rezende and an exhibition: a visual timeline with the chronology of recent Brazilian events related to the Impeachment of president Dilma Rousseff.
The timeline uses text, international newspaper articles and images to explain the current Brazilian political and democratic crisis. It starts by contextualising the Brazilian historical inequality and the ascension to power of Brazil's main left wing party, PT, which started in 1980 as opposition to the military dictatorship. The format of a visual timeline aims to engage with the public and explain this complex subject. It starts with when PT's President Lula was elected in 2002, then details the events related to the impeachment of Dilma Rousseff and ends with Michel Temer's current government.
"We met in Wellington amongst the political crisis in Brazil and got together to protest.
As we strongly felt this crisis had to be told in a different context and angle from the one we usually see in the traditional media, we came up with a way of sharing it with wellingtonians. As good Brazilians, we decided it had to be in a positive atmosphere and, of course, over music." Clarissa Mattos, photographer.
