21 st New Zealand Scout Jamboree to Proceed in Marlborough

Following the quakes of the last week, and after a rigorous site assessment and safety review, SCOUTS New Zealand in consultation with Marlborough District Council confirm today that the 21 st New Zealand Scout Jamboree will go ahead as planned on 29 December 2016.

“This is a thoroughly considered decision,” says Niamh Lawless, Chief Executive of SCOUTS New Zealand.

“The Jamboree sites, buildings and transport routes have been examined by Marlborough District Council and our Jamboree Infrastructure Team, and are unaffected.

“The advice received from our Jamboree Team followed a systematic approach that ensures the safety of our Scouts and Leaders and that safety management systems have been reviewed and are robust in light of recent events.” Ms Lawless says.

“The SCOUTS New Zealand Jamboree Team is prepared, and is providing additional training and specific information to our Scouts, Leaders and Parents in the lead up to Jamboree. The Jamboree Emergency Operations Centre will of course be fully operational from the beginning of the Jamboree,” says Guy Beatson, Jamboree Director.

“Our strong partnership with Marlborough District Council and local emergency management agencies also played a role in the decision to proceed.” Mr Beatson says.

Marlborough District Council fully supports the decision to proceed.

“I am delighted the SCOUTS New Zealand Jamboree will be here. Our focus is on warmly hosting the participants and visitors and keeping them safe, while they enjoy the best that Marlborough has to offer.” says John Leggett, Marlborough Mayor.

“The region’s accommodation, attractions, tours, cruises, shops, restaurants and cafes are all business as usual.” says Mayor Leggett.
