Lady Liberty lights the way as a last minute Fringe addition
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 7th February 2017
Eat, Pray, Shove! Lady Liberty lights the way as a last minute Fringe addition!
Australian comedy-cabaret star makes her NZ debut with a manifesto for the modern woman
Amelia Ryan was most disappointed when the owner of VK’s Comedy Bar sold the business, thus rendering her without a home for the NZ Fringe. However, in a last minute plight to salvage her NZ debut, she’s (JUST) secured a season at the Gryphon Theatre! As Lady Liberty would say…BETTER LATE THAN PREGNANT!
Since co-winning the Your Theatrics Cabaret Contest in 2012, cabaret queen Amelia Ryan has sold-out houses across Australia, New York, London and Edinburgh with her critically acclaimed show A STORM IN A D CUP. Now, she makes her NZ debut with her latest creation, the sexy, sassy and side-splittingly hilarious – AMELIA RYAN IS LADY LIBERTY.
Originally invited by Barry Humphries to debut the show at the Adelaide Cabaret Festival, the show has enjoyed stellar runs throughout the Aussie Fringe and Cabaret circuit, as well as the 2016 Edinbugh Festival Fringe. Now, Amelia takes to the Gryphon Theatre to tackle the pressing (and totally first world) issues facing the modern woman in search of liberty… whatever that is?
With her tongue-in-cheek take on self-improvement and a distinctly feminist edge, Ryan invites us on her quest to transform from "Queen of Calamity" to "Lady of Liberty”. Steamrolling fundamental guides such as the 7 Steps To Buddhist Enlightenment, the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and even the 7 Deadly Sins, she presents her own (questionable) 7 Step Guide to Being a Lady (or Lad) of Liberty. With her signature blend of scintillating stories, pop music mash-ups and perfectly pitched parodies, hilarity ensues.
Combining both highly relatable stories (I mean, who hasn't woken up in bed with a Nigerian Prince?) and razor-sharp social observations, Amelia asks, in an age where women want it all, how do we achieve it? From Las Vegas romps to long lasting love, champagne-guzzling to green juicing and box-gaps to feeling #blessed, she sets on a course of comedy and song to find out. With her winning formula of hilarious parodies (you'll never listen to Cyndi Laupers Time After Time the same way), witty humour and heart-warming honesty, Amelia Ryan is Lady Liberty is a riotous, risqué, real look at what it means to be a modern woman.
