Dunedin Symphony Orchestra Concert Series 2017

Media Release

9 February 2017

DUNEDIN SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA’S (DSO) 2017 CONCERT SEASON BEGINS!!

The DSO has a stunning line-up of internationally-acclaimed guest artists from around the world for our exiting 2017 concerts: violinist Ilya Gringolts – Europe, cellist Li-Wei Qin – China, Australian conductors Daniel Kossov and Richard Davis, Principal Guest Conductor Simon Over - UK, plus leading New Zealand conductors and soloists. The programmes offer plenty of variety: landmark masterpieces and also not-so-well-known works for us to get to know. International Series subscribers have an added benefit: an exclusive 15% discount on Tally Ho! 2, a concert of music from the Dunedin Sound. Judging by the 2015 performance of Tally Ho!, this is bound to be a very popular concert.

The series concerts will follow the well -established pattern of three International Series concerts on Saturday evenings in the Dunedin Town Hall, and two Matinee Series concerts in King’s and Queen’s Performing Arts Centre (each concert receiving two performances: one on Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon).

The DSO will also be accompanying seasons of ballet and choral performances, with the Royal NZ Ballet and City Choir Dunedin respectively. In addition to this, the orchestra will also be presenting a range of educational projects for instrumental players of all standards, including an Otago-wide tour by a chamber ensemble.

2016 was a momentous year with a name change, a year of 50th anniversary celebrations, and at the end of the year the orchestra moved to its new rehearsal and office home Hanover Hall. The former church has had its interior extensively renovated with the plasterwork renewed, stained-glass windows restored, and acoustic panels and carpet have been installed. Soon the orchestra will start rehearsals for its 2017 concerts.
