Conroy Looks for Big Finish

Conroy Looks for Big Finish

Invercargill driver Jamie Conroy heads to the final round of the BNT NZ Touring Car Championship at Hampton Downs International Motorsport Park in North Waikato this weekend seeking a big finish to the season.

“A round win, that is all that is left,” said Conroy at the beginning of a week that will see him make the long trek from his Invercargill base to Hampton Downs with his Allied 24/7 Fuel Falcon. “Three wins from the three races would be good but we will take it step by step. It won’t be easy as it is the home circuit for both Simon Fleming and Chelsea Herbert,” said Conroy.

Conroy currently sits third in the championship and also leads the Rookie Championship. It is a tribute to Conroy’s driving that he sits where he does in the point standings. Problems in the opening race at four of the five rounds to date have meant that the results gained have often come from the back of the grid. Despite that he has secured two race wins and five second placings and in his one relatively trouble-free round at Taupo he missed the round win by just one point. He has also taken a pole position but what has derailed his championship is the fact he has not finished four of the races.

Since the last round at Manfeild the team have repaired the problems that plagued them. “To be honest the things that affected our results there were easily rectified and we are more on top of things than at any other point of the series,” says Conroy.

He is locked in a good battle with Chelsea Herbert for the rookie title. “She took the lead off me during the Manfeild round at one stage before I took it back and this is her home track. I have been to Hampton Downs before but it is a place that took me a little while to get my head around. I found it difficult when I went there in Formula Ford but I have since had quite a few laps in TRS.”

The one thing Conroy will be hoping for this weekend will be a trouble-free round and if that eventuates then the Allied 24/7 Fuel Falcon will no doubt be among the frontrunners.

Conroy's campaign in the BNT NZ Touring Car Championship is supported by Allied 24/7 Fuel, Mobil 1, Horgan Farms, Southland Continuous Group, Sievwright Panel & Paint, PPG, Bluff Engineering & Welding, Choppa Tyres, E Hayes & Sons, Farmlands Co-operative Society Limited, Farmlands Real Estate, Vital Signs and Southern Probuilt Engines.
