Twelve Tiger Moths take to the skies at Wanaka Airport

Wanaka locals could have been forgiven for thinking Easter 2018 had come early yesterday (Tuesday 7 March) as 12 Tiger Moths descended on Wanaka Airport with a hiss and a roar.

The vintage aircraft –built between 1935 and 1940– came from as far away as Auckland for a two-week long rally of the South Island and put on a mini Warbirds Over Wanaka show for those lucky enough to be at the airport yesterday.

Before the Wanaka visit, some of the stop offs have been Blenheim, Hanmer, Omarama and Mt Cook. Next stops for the group are Alexandra, Nokomai Station and Manapouri.

Over the last two weeks, up to 13 additional vintage aircraft have joined the group which meets annually for the social rally and visits different parts of the country. One of the rally organisers Amanda Rutland said “there are around 40 Tiger Moths in New Zealand with many not in flying condition. So it’s good to get this many out flying for the rally”.
