Karekare Beach Races – Saturday 8th April 2017 – from 11.00 a.m.
Enjoy all the fun and excitement of the Karekare Beach Races on Saturday 8 April. This colourful community fundraiser carnival starts at 11am with a Fantastic Hat competition – this year’s creative theme is Feathered Friends with three categories to enter for children and adults.
There is a thrilling line-up of horse races with nine races for horses and ponies. A favourite attraction is the Kidz Kartz miniature ponies freewheeling down the beach pulling sulkies with their young drivers behind. “There’s still time to enter the races if you’re keen to experience an exhilarating gallop down this superb beach” says Caroline Grove, one of the race organisers. You can email Caroline cgrovekk@gmail.com or go to www.karekare.org.nz for an entry form.
There is always something for everyone with great local food, the popular pony rides, sweepstake betting kids’ fun races, quick-fire raffles and the famous Karekare t-shirts. This year’s t-shirt was designed by 11 year old Lily Cannon, a budding young artist and former student at Lone Kauri School, one of the recipients of the funds raised. The other main beneficiary is the Karekare Surf Lifesaving Club who have patrolled Karekare beach for over 80 years. All the proceeds they receive will go towards building a much needed new surf club.
The day will start earlier for some at 9am with The "Human Event" a run from Piha that follows the Hillary Trail and finishes at the Beach races village on Karekare Beach. So go to http://lacticturkey.co.nz/KarekareBeachRacesHumanEvent/if you are up for some exercise before devouring the famous surf-club sandburgers and irresistible Lone Kauri School cakes
A shuttle bus will run regularly from Piha to help
take the hassle out of parking. For information on the
shuttle service and any other enquiries check out https://www.facebook.com/KarekareBeachRaces/
