Reliability the aim for van Klink at Canterbury

Kaiapoi’s Marcus van Klink heads to round three of the Brian Green Property Group New Zealand Rally Championship, the Lone Star Rally Canterbury, confident that his team have ironed out some of the bugs that plagued them at the car’s championship debut one round earlier.

The Buteline Mazda RX-8, powered by a 20B Tripe Rotor engine, showed glimpses of immense speed in some of the wettest conditions seen on a Whangarei rally in recent history, despite being hampered by fuelling issues for most of the event and eventually succumbing to a differential failure.

Since that event, the car has received a complete revamp and rebuild of the fuelling system and van Klink and his co-driver Dave Neill will be fighting at the top of the open two-wheel drive time sheets across the ten special stages.

Another aspect of the pair’s home rally that the team has had to prepare for is the inclusion of two stages run under the cover of darkness to finish the event. The dark back-drop should only enhance the Buteline Mazda’s flame-spitting ability, but will add in a challenge for the pair.

“I must admit I’m not quite one-hundred percent sure about the night stages this year, it’s always hard work, but the flames will look pretty cool from the back of the Buteline Mazda,” says van Klink. “In all seriousness though, the guys have done a fair bit of work on the fuelling system of the car, replacing and re-designing, so I’m hoping it will work well.”

The Lone Star Rally Canterbury kicks off with a ceremonial start from Lone Star in Manchester Street, Christchurch on Saturday afternoon. Crews then leave Rangiora at 8.30am on Sunday to take on 10 high-speed special stages totalling 195 kilometres, before returning to the Lone Star for the ceremonial finish from 7pm.
