New Festival of Architecture Event Focuses on Activity

Architecture and activity the focus of a new event in the Festival of Architecture

Architecture and active challenges combine in a region-first event, as part of the annual Festival of Architecture.

The Festival of Architecture, run by the New Zealand Institute of Architects (NZIA), is a successor to Architecture Week, which was predominately an Auckland-based series designed to connect like-minded professional and industry organisations.

This year’s Festival of Architecture sees the scope widened, with events and activities now held in other towns and cities – including Tauranga, which is playing host to the festival for the first time.

Alongside workshops, exhibits and forums, one of the more light-hearted public events is the Urbex Lunchbreak Challenge, an ‘Amazing Race’ style lunchbreak challenge designed to test your physical and creative skills, as well as your architectural knowledge.

The Urbex Lunchbreak Challenge will involve teams of 3-5 participants visiting a number of key sites around the Tauranga CBD, and completing physical and mental challenges to gain points.

The event is a collaborative effort between Sport Bay of Plenty's Play in the Bay initiative and festival organisers New Zealand Institute of Architects (NZIA).

NZIA spokeswoman Shara Paulo says this free event is a great team-building exercise, a fun way to get fit, learn about architecture and break up the 9-to-5.

“Urbex is short for Urban Exploration, which is exactly what this challenge is all about.

“When you think about the role a quality built environment can play in improving our health and wellbeing, we thought a lunchtime challenge like this is the perfect way to get out and about, to learn more about Tauranga and discover what the city has to offer!”

Prizes will be up for grabs for the winning team.

Registrations for the Urbex Lunchbreak Challenge are now open and all are welcome to join in.

Sign up your team of 3-5 people at www.sportbop.co.nz/urbex-lunchbreak-challenge.
