New Zealand Cup and Show Week, 11-18 November 2017
New Zealand Cup and Show Week, 11-18 November 2017
Spring has sprung!
The daffodils are out in bloom and so are the tickets for New Zealand’s biggest and most exciting spring festival. Tickets for NZ Cup and Show Week go on sale this Friday 1st September.
Every ticket purchased online in September goes in the draw to win a Rarotonga escape for two including flights and accommodation thanks to House of Travel and Pacific Resorts Rarotonga, the perfect R&R.
As Christchurch’s hottest week of the year, it is the most recognised and vibrant racing, fashion and agricultural festival in the country, spanning eight days.
Both Addington Raceway and Riccarton Park Racecourse will abound with stylish fashionistas. Highlights include the Westfield Style Stakes and ZM Body Art at Addington Raceway and the coveted Fashion in the Field, held at Riccarton Park Racecourse. The Westfield Riccarton Best Dressed Lady will win return flights to Buenos Aires courtesy of Air New Zealand.
The week marks the countdown to the Kiwi summer coupled with longer days. The hospitality industry relish this week as they ramp up their activities for the season. As Christchurch city revitalises and more restaurants and bars open up, this naturally has a flow on effect for tourism and economic development for the area.
“NZ Cup and Show Week is one of the biggest weeks for hospitality in Christchurch and is the start of the tourism season. It also has big economic benefits to the city as there is a huge influx of capital to Canterbury,” says Peter Morrison, Canterbury Branch President for Hospitality New Zealand.
On the racing side, both gallops and harness racing are the main events. The Christchurch Casino New Zealand Trotting Cup races are held at Addington Raceway on Tuesday 14 November while the Christchurch Casino New Zealand Cup and gravelhouse.com 1000 Guineas Day is held at Riccarton Park Racecourse on the Saturday. This event is a little more casual than the Tuesday proceedings, however a fascinator or boater hat would not look out of place.
It’s not all fashion and horse racing. A family favourite is the Canterbury A & P Show, held 15-17 November, where country comes to the city. Over 3,000 animals will be on site, competing for the ‘best of the best’ showing titles, with a total prize pool of $100,000 up for grabs. Gumboots and picnic baskets a must.
Tickets on sale Friday 1st September and available at www.nzcupandshow.co.nz
