David Mullins Wins Gold at AIDA Freediving Championships
Freediving: David Mullins sets new National Depth Record and earns a Gold medal at the AIDA World Depth Championships
Following on from his successful dive to 105m in fresh water in Taupa in February of this year , setting an unofficial freshwater record and recording the deepest dive in NZ waters David has been able to go to the AIDI World Depth Championships held in the warmer waters of Roatan in Honduras.
David has focused on the Constant Weight (CWT) discipline, where you are allowed to use fins and maintain a constant weight for the duration of your dive.
For the CWT dive he nominated and completed his 126m dive, setting a new NZ National Record.
This depth was the same as nominated by the current WR holder Alexey Molchanov and as he also completed his dive cleanly , so they each take gold in this discipline.
David would like to thank and recognise his sponsors, allowing him to compete - Cressi NZ, Ocean Hunter and Tulsi - Contemporary Indian Cuisine.
Freediving can be dangerous if practiced alone or without proper instruction due to the risk of hypoxic blackout, and a course or introductory session with a freediving club is highly recommended.
Clubs offer intro evenings for anyone who snorkels, likes the water or just wants to see how long they can hold their breath in a safe environment. For more information find them on Facebook.
