Waitakere Gardens Fukiya Shibu – first club ex Japan
Waitakere Gardens Fukiya Shibu (Club) holds weekly sessions for an enthusiastic group of members. If you haven’t heard of Sport Fukiya, it’s the fastest growing sport amongst seniors in Japan with over 30,000 members although it’s a sport that can be played by people of all ages and abilities. It conjures up visions of Ninja warriors, but in fact is a sport that has acknowledged health benefits due to its abdominal breathing technique and form. Players are graded from 5th to 1st Kyu , and then 1st to 6th Dan. Club President, Roy Stephen, is a 1st Dan and is currently the highest graded player in this country.
On February 1st two officials from Sport Fukiya Japan (a 5th Dan and a 6th Dan) will visit New Zealand to grade our members, and to take part in a Friendship Tournament on Monday 4th February in the Events Centre at Waitakere Gardens Retirement Village at 10:15am. Spectators are welcome.
The Manager of the New Zealand Branch of Sport Fukiya is Adrian Roberts, and a website (www.fukiya.nz) has been set up to handle enquiries from prospective members.
