Boston Comes to Howick - Broadway Hit Play Good People NZ Premiere Season at Howick Little Theatre
Howick Little Theatre is currently presenting the New Zealand premiere season of the Broadway hit play Good People.
Written by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright David Lindsay-Abaire and awarded the 2011 New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Play, Good People is set in South Boston, USA. This tough but tender comedy of manners follows Margie Walsh, a middle-aged single mother with a disabled adult daughter at home, who is fired from her job at the dollar store and facing eviction. When Margie discovers that a high school flame is now a successful doctor, she swallows her pride and seeks his help, sparking questions about class, commitment and what it means to be a “good person.”
Good People has been hailed as “enthralling, utterly gripping, remarkable” by the Los Angeles Times, “painfully funny and gut wrenchingly real” by Washingtonian Magazine and “masterful and oh-so-compelling” by The Boston Globe.
HLT’s production features a cast of local actors, including Carleena Walsh, James Calverley, Ngaire-Ann Hobson, Judy Rankin, Matthew Van Den Berg and Estelle Chout.
"Good People is a superbly written play and it is wonderful that it is finally being shown in New Zealand' says director Vic Leilua. "The cast is excellent and bring to life a compelling and entertaining story that touches on relatable themes of class and race and gives us an insight into the struggles of people trying to survive through audacity, friendship and a sense of humour."
Good People is on at HLT until July 28, 8pm. Tickets available from iticket.co.nz
