New Immigrant is Everyday Hero for Save the Children

Being new to New Zealand isn’t stopping Chinese born Jing Hu (32) of Mount Albert, running a half marathon to support Save the Children NZ.

Jing, who has been in New Zealand since early May, is looking forward to running in the ASB Auckland Marathon on 28 October.

She says, “I’ve been running for a couple of years and this will be my second half marathon. My first in New Zealand though.”

Jing says she’s been moving around a lot for the past couple of years, and had heard so much about New Zealand and thought it would be a very nice country to settle down in.

“I like the vibe of living here, the contact with nature. I have worked as a face-to-face fundraiser on streets, where I got to talk to people. I found out that people are quite nice, warm and friendly here, they are always ready to help.”

She’s decided to pay that kindness forward and says, “If I participate in any running event I prefer to run for a charity. I understand that there are dozens of charities I can choose from. But I believe children are the most vulnerable group, not mention when they are in situations where they are seriously in need of help. I hope every one of them would get a wonderful problem-free childhood, prosper and shine. That’s why I chose to support Save the Children.

“I am always trying my best to help, especially children. I have done other volunteer work trying to fight child marriage and I sponsor a child in Africa. I have also done a couple of charity runs back in Europe.”

Heidi Coetzee, Chief Executive Save the Children said, “It’s very heartening to see members of our community raising vital funds and awareness for our projects. The funds raised will help children in countries where we have international projects like Bangladesh and Thailand. We wish Jing all the best for her race on 28 October.”
