Finding Her Passion Through Volunteering
Sukhmani Dhillon is only 17, but she’s already committed to helping and leading others.
Lately, she’s fulfilled that passion through volunteering for Recreate, an organisation that empowers young people with disabilities. Last year she decided she wanted to do more in her community, searched online and found Recreate on Seek Volunteer.
“I’m Head of the Community Pillar at school (ACG Tauranga) and I love being around other people, both the people I know and new people.”
She helps out at Recreate’s regular activities for young people - beach days, movie events, relaxing days in Rotorua at the trampoline park.
“I have a real passion for helping people and being part of the community. Going along to these activities means I meet new people and some familiar faces and learn more about their lives. I’ve always been a leader at school, and want to get more experience of the outside community.
“I truly believe that volunteering as a student is an excellent way to gain real-world experiences. It helps me understand different perspectives, build empathy and grow my interpersonal skills. These experiences will guide me as I continue in both my studies and community involvement.
“I’m always looking forward to integrating my passion for science with my commitment to helping others. No matter where I go, I’ll keep seeking out opportunities to volunteer and create positive change.”
Next year she’ll be off to university, hopefully Auckland, to study science, especially biology, and is looking forward to a career in the sciences. No doubt she’ll find somewhere to volunteer there too.
