Concert Highlights Local Talent With Music From McLeod, Murray, Chung, Nikora And More

Kāpiti Chorale's upcoming concert, Wellington Composers, shines a spotlight on the musical talent within our own region. The concert takes place on Saturday 9 August at 4 PM at St Paul’s Church, Paraparaumu.

“We are a region blessed with artistic talent,” says Music Director Eric Sidoti. “And we don't often showcase it as much as we should.”

The programme begins with works from two major New Zealand figures: the late composer Jenny McLeod and lyricist Shirley Murray. The Chorale will then perform pieces by living artists including Rosemary Russell (Plimmerton) and Jonathan Berkahn, both active in the Wellington music scene for decades.

Soprano Cadence Chung, the Chorale’s 2023 Performance Award recipient, will sing her own composition as part of the concert. The suite, written for voice, flute, and piano, showcases both her writing and vocal talents.

Eric Sidoti also contributes an arrangement of Pepeha, a song by popular New Zealand band Six60. The concert will close with Mass in E Minor by Thomas Nikora, performed by the largest choir to present the work to date. “It shows the remarkable range of this very talented individual,” says Sidoti.
